Located in the southwestern part of Kenya, Maasai Mara lies along the Great Rift Valley and is contiguous with the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The reserve was named after the Maasai people, who originally inhabited the land it sits on.
The Great Migration is the largest annual animal migration on the planet, and you can watch it as it happens at the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. During this world-famous event, more than 1.5 million wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, move from the Serengeti and into the Maasai Mara in July in search of water and pasture. In late October to early November, they make the treacherous journey back home.

The size of the herd is mind-boggling, but that’s just one part of the spectacle you’ll witness. As the grazers attempt to cross the border, predators lay in wait, and only the strongest or luckiest will survive. You’ll get to see firsthand this fight for survival as the wildebeests cross the crocodile-infested Mara River. It’s a sight like no other and makes for an epic safari experience you must see at least once in your lifetime.

Maasai Mara is also home to the big five. This coupled with the Great Migration plus the park’s proximity to Nairobi has made it a top safari destination in Kenya. Not to mention its picturesque landscape, savanna plains, rolling hills, acacia trees, and rivers that provide sustenance to one of the most diverse wildlife populations on the continent.
